Girls in STEAM

Participants will be able to explore all aspects of STEAM – Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math – to see what interests them. All workshops are held in the STEM Design Studios (unless otherwise noted) at Whitaker Center for Science and the Arts.

Dates and Times

Girls in STEAM Workshops run October to June, on Saturday afternoons, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM.

Registration

Tickets are $8 per member or $12 per non-member – per girl, per workshop! Visit the Box Office the day of the workshop to add on a ticket to UPMC Science Center. 

Please Note: UPMC Science Center exploration before your workshop is NOT included in the price of your workshop.  UPMC Science Center hours are 10 AM – 5 PM and tickets can be purchased at the Box Office the day of your workshop.

Ready… Set… STOP Motion! 

October 19, 2024

Watching cartoons is fun… but have you ever tried making them?  We will create our own stop motion animations and learn about all the work that goes into making our favorite cartoons.

Living on the Red Planet 

November 9, 2024

Explore Earth’s closest neighbor in this out-of-this-world program. Girls will design rockets for travel and will use Sphero mini-robots to plan and execute a simulated mission to Mars.  Will you be part of the Artemis mission?

Day at the Amusement Park

Let’s take a trip to the amusement park or… Whitaker Center’s Innovation Zone?  Girls will learn about the physics of popular rides, like roller coasters, while designing their own theme park using the computer application Roller Coaster Tycoon.

Designing Rocks and Minerals

Looking for the perfect holiday gift? Create your own unique piece of this jewelry in this activity where geology meets art. Girls will practice using a rock hammer to crack open and reveal geodes like a geologist and then transform them into a beautiful piece of jewelry!

The Great Outdoors

What do the Grand Canyon, Glacier Bay, and Sequoia have in common?  They are protected National Parks!  Girls will discuss the importance of land protection, natural ecosystems, and biodiversity while reaching out to learn more from a Park Ranger.

Fun with Fossils

Think like an -ologist!  Girls will learn about dinosaurs and the scientists who study them.  We will excavate a fossil, explore the diversity of dinos, and puzzle together pieces of the past.  

Backstage and Behind the Scenes

Experience technology from both sides of the camera.  Girls will learn how to create stunning on-screen visuals made for television.  With the help of TV production technology, we will test real-world applications of technology used in TV. Lights, camera, ACTION!

Designing Adaptations

Plants Galore

Plants are an important part of the Biosphere!  They help cycle Nitrogen, Oxygen, and Carbon through our atmosphere.  We will explore the different types of potted plants and how to care for them.  Plants can also be decorative – so we will design pots to keep our plants in to take home!
