Our team is ready to welcome you to a world of boundary-breaking access to STEAM experiences! Here are this year’s themes:
Saturday, October 17th: Cosmic Explorers
Explore our Solar System in this out-of-this-world program! Girls will design and build model rocks for space travel and develop their understanding of the cosmos. Using the Universe Sandbox application in the Innovation Zone, we will explore our Solar System and beyond!
Saturday, November 21st: Burning Up (NEW!)
State changes are all around us… Melting, cooling, freezing, and more! Girls will learn about solids, liquids, gases, and where slime fits in. We will make candles – a sweet-smelling example of how temperature causes matter to change!
Saturday, December 19th: Storm Chasers
It is winter-weather-season! This means cold temperatures, snow, ice, and freezing rain. Girls will learn about clouds, winds, and other features that contribute to severe weather. Join us for your first shift as a meteorologist!
Saturday, January 23rd: Tote-ally Art (NEW!)
Art and Science go together when it comes to fashion and design! Girls will examine color theory and determine Geometry’s importance in aesthetics. Girls will tie-dye and decorate canvas bags to take fashion home!
Saturday, February 20th: Spore & Explore
What do animals need to survive? How do they adapt to their habitat? Girls will answer these questions and more as they explore unique adaptations found in the animal kingdom. Using the Spore application in the Innovation Zone, Girls will learn about Biology while practicing digital creation and design.
Saturday, March 20th: Pottery of the Past (NEW!)
Pottery has been around since ancient times. Pottery-making has evolved alongside human civilization! Using ancient techniques, Girls will create their own pottery! Girls will also discuss paleontology vs. archaeology and excavate their own fossils.
Saturday, April 17th: Cosmetic Chemistry
Ever wondered what’s really inside your favorite lip balm, lotion, or makeup? This fun and interactive workshop is designed especially for Girls who love makeup, skincare, and all things creative! Girls will explore the scientific me.
Saturday, May 15th: Science of Thrills
Let’s take a trip to the amusement park or… Whitaker Center’s Innovation Zone? Girls will learn about the physics of popular rides, like roller coasters, while designing their own theme park using the computer application Roller Coaster Tycoon.

UPMC Science Center hours are 10 A.M. – 5 P.M., and tickets can be purchased at the Box Office the day of your workshop.
