Tech Explorer Sessions are Now Open for Registration for Grades 3-8!

Technology is everywhere—and it’s changing the way we learn, create, and connect. In these 2-hour workshops, students will explore a new aspect of technology in each session. Every topic will build problem-solving skills, digital literacy, and creative confidence. Each workshop is hands-on and designed to spark curiosity in young tech learners

Please Note: Science Center exploration before your workshop is NOT included in the price of your workshop.  You can purchase a discounted Science Center and/or Digital Cinema ticket(s) for the day of the workshop at our box office.

Dates and Times

Tech Explorers occurs monthly but times vary based on the season. Please note the program runs 1-3 p.m. on Sundays from September – December, and then pivots to Saturday mornings 10 a.m. to noon from January – May. All sessions will be held in the PNC Innovation Zone. 

Drop-In Sampler
Get a taste of all the fun we have in store for our newest programs this September! Guests visiting the UPMC Science Center and Select Medical Digital Cinema are welcome to drop in and join us for a free Tech Explorers session the weekend of September 13-14.

Please Note: Other than during our Drop-In Sampler Sessions, Science Center exploration before your session is NOT included in the workshop. Science Center tickets can be purchased at the Box Office the day of your workshop.

$12 per session non-member
$8 per session member

Tickets are nonrefundable.

Attendees may purchase a discounted ticket to the UPMC Science Center or the Select Digital Cinema for the day of their workshop at our box office.
Discounted tickets for UPMC Science Center are $10. 
Discounted tickets for Select Digital Cinema are $6.

Code Secrets
Sept. 13 & 14, 2025

If you are wondering what Tech Explorers programs are like, this is your opportunity to stop in and check it out. Science Center guests are invited to visit the Innovation Zone and learn about our engaging tech programs from our Education Team. Step into the mysterious world of hidden messages and digital security! Participants will explore how information is protected and transmitted in the digital world. Through interactive challenges, games, and hands-on activities, participants will learn how to create, analyze, and crack codes! Please note: these sessions on Sept. 13 and 14 are being offered as free on a drop-in basis for guests with the cost of admission to Whitaker Center for the day.

Assembly Required 
Oct. 26, 2025

Learn what parts make up the computers we use every day! Participants will learn how PCs are put together and will be instructed on the basic function of the individual parts.  Using PC Building Simulator and through disassembling real PC towers, participants will put their computer software knowledge to the test!

Minecraft: Game Design
Nov. 23, 2025

This workshop combines creative thinking, block coding, and game design to help participants bring their game ideas to life! Using Minecraft as the creative platform, participants will turn their favorite game in to a game-making machine. No coding experience needed — just imagination and a love for building!

Designing Adaptations
Jan. 24, 2026

A perfect combination of Technology and Science! Using Spore, students will explore the evolution of species — designing life forms that adapt and evolve in response to environmental challenges. Then, in Terra Nil, they’ll restore ecosystems, learning how nature can recover from destruction through thoughtful environmental design.

Beyond the Pixels
Feb. 28, 2026

Graphic design encompasses so much of what we see online today — including branding basics, logo design, and visual identity. Participants will be guided through the creative process of designing for both fun and function. You’ll be amazed at what you create by the end of the workshop!

Minecraft: Built Different
March 28, 2026

Minecraft isn’t just a game — it’s a powerful tool for learning, collaboration, and creativity. Participants will use skills in critical thinking and problem solving as they solve real-world problems through code. Come explore everything that Minecraft has to offer!

Stellar Systems
April 25, 2026

Using the Universe Sandbox application, participants will explore our Solar System and beyond as we uncover the wonders of space. Along with manipulating star and planets, participants will look at the aerospace engineering needed to explore the cosmos. Explore our Solar System in this out-of-this-world program!

AI: Algorithms and Ethics
May 23, 2026

Participants will explore how algorithms influence decisions, how AI technologies are developed, and the ethical challenges that arise when machines are given control.  Great for those new to AI, this workshop focuses on understanding technology — as creators, users, and responsible citizens.
