Think Barack and Michelle. William and Kate. Kobe and Shaq. Peanut butter and jelly. Some duos just work. They balance each other out while bringing the best of both worlds to the table. They challenge, uplift, and co-create in the best ways.
Now think: art and science.
Conventional wisdom might place them on opposite ends of the “dating pool”— one analytical and data-driven, the other expressive and compelled by emotion. But when merged, they bring together two different worlds, representing the limitless potential of combining imagination and creativity. Like any great power couple, they create a synergy that sparks connection, challenges convention, and ignites bold new ideas of what is possible.
So, what happens when art gets scientific and science gets artsy? Our brains get a full-fledged workout! These seemingly separate worlds overlap in surprising ways, unlocking new perspectives, driving innovation, and creating tools that allow us to understand and feel the world more deeply. When they intersect, art and science amplify each other. Together, they are more than just a sum of their parts.
- Art helps visualize complex scientific concepts and inspires new approaches.
- Science hones in on the technical foundation and analytical rigor that is sometimes essential in aligning, informing, and fortifying artistic aspirations.
- Art emotionalizes intelligence, which can humanize science and anchor new processes in sound ethics.
When married together, they build a shared language that both informs and inspires. This power couple relies upon blending the things they have in common to make the most impact.
Every power couple recognizes the importance of communication:
Art can convey scientific concepts to a wide audience, making complex ideas more accessible and engaging.
Think about it: Photography and digital art depicting the vastness of space.
Every power couple needs inspiration to be successful:
Art can spark new ideas and approaches to scientific problems.
Think about it: Bioengineers using design thinking to build tomorrow’s technology.
More importantly, every power couple needs a solid, shared foundation to thrive:
Both art and science rely on creativity to develop hypotheses, design experiments, find innovative solutions, and express their ideas.
And at Whitaker Center, we stand right at that intersection.
We are Central Pennsylvania’s launchpad for imagination — where art and science come together to power possibility. As the region’s hub for cultural, scientific, and educational engagement, Whitaker Center helps fuel community development, inspire future innovators, and celebrate the creative thinkers shaping our future. We aim to enhance our region’s quality of life and economic vitality as a destination of choice for the very best that Central PA has to offer.
Our start pair of opposites attract in a meet-cute fashion at the current Above and Beyond traveling exhibit sponsored by TE Connectivity. Hosted in the Gloria M. Olewine Gallery of our UPMC Science Center, this highly interactive exhibit about the wonders of space flight is a dynamic display of how art and science bolster innovative thinking and problem-solving inside and outside of our atmosphere.

Bilingual title cards and displays (English and Spanish) reflect our commitment to making Whitaker Center a welcoming and inclusive destination for all to enjoy.
Come explore the out-of-this-world masterpiece before it lifts off to a new home on May 25, 2025.
Remember, when art and science come together, the sky is not the limit — it’s just the beginning.
