Shawan and the Wonton - Songs, soul and a taste of New Orleans, with Mike Dempsey on the Steinway concert grand piano
Thursday, February 6, Kunkel Gallery

Born and raised in Harrisburg, Shawan Rice currently lives and works in New Orleans. With each performance, Rice invites the audience into her world of poetic lyrics and haunting melodies as she draws inspiration from her life experiences. The vulnerable and transparent nature of her approach to music leaves the listener with an experience like no other.

From blues to jazz to gospel-esque music, her deep, introspective lyrics and sound harken back to the 1960s rock scene, drawing inspiration from bands like The Doors and Pink Floyd. Rice has the unique ability to connect with each audience on a personal level in voice and style often compared to Amy Winehouse (who Rice admits is her biggest influence), Alicia Keys and Billie Holiday.
