Become an Expert Engineer at Tech City

Now Open

Whitaker Center welcomes its newest traveling exhibition, Tech City. Sponsored by Bayer HealthCare, this fun and interactive exhibit about engineering features 12 activity stations where children can invent, design, create and build. Visitors can learn first-hand how engineers think, by designing solutions and testing them to find out if their creations actually work.

Guests will have the opportunity to engage their bodies and minds in these exhibits:

  • Separation Station - Visitors can “clean” the water with this hydraulic system using various filters to separate plastic beads that are different in size and density.
  • Design the Plaza - This highly visual and tactile design station allows visitors to experience the tradeoffs between cost and aesthetics while creating patterns for the Tech City plaza using geometric tiles.
  • Catch the Wind - The air-flow visualization system uses small bubbles to allow visitors to design a landscaping environment to protect a park on a windy lake shore.
  • Dam the Creek - Visitors prevent the creek from flooding Tech City by building a gravity dam using metal blocks.
  • Build a Bridge - Visitors use an interactive program to design a bridge, then experiment with a model bridge “build and test” station. They can also walk across three 2.4 meter-long bridges with different levels of sag.
  • And more!

Tech City
was developed by the Sciencenter and Cornell University with funding from the National Science Foundation.

Tech City gives kids a chance to step into the shoes of the engineers who make modern cities work, building bridges and reservoirs, creating traffic control networks, and more,” said Steve Bishop, Vice President, Science and IMAX Programs. “It’s great fun for the whole family.”
