Scout Badge Workshops

 

 Join our Education Staff as they assist your troop or pack in fulfilling the requirements for official Scout Badges!

Each workshop session covers a STEM-related badge PLUS enjoy time in the Harsco Science Center at no additional cost. Our workshops are a great troop activity that help your troop or pack earn a badge while working together as a team!

Bear Scout Robotics Elective NEW!

This is a pilot program. At this time, only one date is available.
Cancellation Policy: We’re sorry, but we cannot issue refunds for cancellations less than two weeks from the workshop date.

What is a robot? Boy Scouts will learn about robots that perform jobs that are too dangerous, dirty, dull or difficult for humans to perform. Scouts will learn how robots are designed to operate in similar ways to humans and will build a simple robot to take home.

Dive into the world of forensic science and criminal psychology with this workshop. Learn how to think like a detective and analyze fingerprints, body language, eyewitness accounts, and more!

Juniors Programming Robots and Designing Robots Badges

Juniors will explore the basics of coding and create their own robot prototypes in this collaborative STEM badge workshop. Scouts will also get to try coding real robots such as Spheros and Ozobots. This session helps to prepare Junior Scouts for the 21st century workforce as we will also discuss the future of robots and some of the latest advances in the world of robotics.

Participants will receive the Programming Robots and Designing Robots badges at the conclusion of the workshop.

Juniors Paddle Boat Design Challenge Badge NEW!

Juniors will explore the concepts of buoyancy and energy in this hands-on design challenge. Scouts will use the design thinking process to brainstorm, design, create, and improve their own rubber band-powered paddleboats that they will get take home at the end of the workshop. This challenge focuses on essential 21st century skills including collaboration, communication, creativity, and critical thinking.

Participants will receive the Paddle Boat Design Challenge badge at the conclusion of the workshop.

Juniors Balloon Car Design Challenge NEW!

Junior Scouts will explore the concepts of potential and kinetic energy in this hands-on STEM design challenge. Scouts will use the design thinking process framework to create and improve their own balloon powered cars that they will get take home at the end of the workshop. This challenge focuses on essential 21st century skills including collaboration, communication, creativity, and critical thinking.

Participants will receive the Balloon Car Design Challenge badge at the conclusion of the workshop.

Brownies Space Science Adventurer Badge NEW!

How often have you gone outside and looked at night sky? Can you name any of the constellations? Do you know what phase the moon is in? Are you able to point out any visible planets in the sky? Learn all about the twinkling stars and other features of the night sky in this workshop.

Participants will receive the Space Science Adventurer badge at the conclusion of the workshop.

Brownies Programming and Designing Robots Brownie Badge

Brownies will discover how robots are built to complete tasks and the fundamentals of coding in this hands-on STEM focused badge workshop. Troops will program real robots such as Spheros and Ozobots during the session. Brownies will learn about simple machines and how they are connected to robots in order to support task completion, and will create their own robot prototypes in a collaborative engineering process using the design thinking process framework.

Participants will receive the Programming Robots and Designing Robots badges at the conclusion of the workshop.

Daisies What Robots Do, How Robots Move and Design a Robot Badges

Daisies will explore the world of robotics in this hands-on STEM badge workshop! Scouts will learn the fundamentals of programming and investigate how simple machines are used to build robots. Using a collaborative engineering design process, Daisies will also create their own robot prototype that solves an everyday problem.

Participants will receive the What Robots Do, How Robots Move, and Design a Robot badges at the conclusion of the workshop.

We welcome siblings and parents of troop members! While space is limited in the workshops, we are happy to welcome siblings of troop members and extra parents who want to come along for the day and have some fun in the science center while the troop members are taking part in the workshop. Siblings and parents of girls taking part in the workshop will receive $5 off admission to Harsco Science Center when they register together at the Whitaker Center Box Office on the day of the troop’s visit.
