PNC Grow up Great with Science
Thanks to a major grant from the PNC Foundation to Whitaker Center for Science and the Arts, area preschool educators at Capital Area Head Start (CAHS) have opportunities to improve their skills in teaching hands-on science basics in their classrooms.
The grant supports Grow Up Great with Science, PNC’s initiative to help foster a foundation in science for area preschoolers. A study by the National Research Council recognized that providing young children with research-based mathematics and science learning is likely to pay off with increased achievement, literacy, and work skills in these critical areas.
Whitaker Center was one of 15 recipients in seven states and the District of Columbia to receive funding through PNC Grow Up Great. Whitaker Center’s grant is for two years, covering the 2009-2010 and 2010-2011 school years, with funding to train local preschool teachers and introduce families to science through visits to the Center’s interactive exhibits. In addition, Science Center educators travel to classrooms to help preschool teachers carry out an integrated teaching model.
Please note: This program is limited to CAHS centers and is by invitation only. For more information, contact Lori Lauver, Director of Education, email here or 717/724-3865.
