Known for their internationally acclaimed chart topping hit, A Whiter Shade of Pale, Procol Harum is one of the true pioneers of 60s progressive and psychedelic rock. Formed in 1967 by Gary Brooker and Keith Reid, the band’s debut performance was as the opener for Jimi Hendrix in London.
1969’s A Salty Dog album and 1971's Procol Harum Live: In Concert with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, both became firm favorites with fans and critics alike. Aside from many line-up changes throughout the years, the group continued to release 12 studio albums including their 1967 self-titled debut, Exotic Birds and Fruit, Procol’s Ninth, The Long Goodbye, and their latest studio release The Well’s on Fire. Spirit of Nøkken (2009) is the band’s latest live album recorded together on tour.
2009, 42 years from the release of A Whiter Shade of Pale, marked the band’s monumental first smash hit recognized as the “most-played single of the past seventy-five years.” As founding member Gary Brooker still leads from behind the piano, for him it’s all about the songs: “Procol does not deal with pastiche or trying to re-do a blues or a be-bop,” he insists. “We really enjoy playing challenging things.”
Procol Harum has recently released ten re-mastered CD albums and the acclaimed DVD, In Concert with the Danish National Concert Orchestra (in addition to the anthology, Secrets of the Hive: The Best of Procol Harum and the Live at Union Chapel DVD), and a special 4-disc DVD/CD box set – All This and More – released in 2009.
Current band members are Gary Brooker (piano/vocals), Josh Phillips (Hammond organ), Geoff Dunn (percussion), Matt Pegg (bass guitar), and Geoff Whitehorn (lead guitar). Procol Harum is currently touring around the globe and across the Untied States.
