Girl Scout Badge Workshops

 Join our Education Staff as they assist your troop in fulfilling the requirements for official Girl Scout Badges!

Each workshop session covers a STEM-related badge PLUS enjoy time in the Harsco Science Center at no additional cost. Our workshops are a great troop activity that help your troop earn a badge while working together as a team!

FALL 2018 WORKSHOPS

Juniors Detective Badge *SOLD OUT*
Stories, movies and television are full of amazing detectives solving mysteries and bringing criminals to justice. Their job is important, exciting and takes serious skills — skills you can try in this badge. Grab your magnifying glass and dive into the science of detecting! Topics include: honing your observation skills, communicating in code, analyzing fingerprints, using microscopes to analyze evidence and solving mysteries.

Juniors Entertainment Technology Badge *SOLD OUT*
There's an old saying that all work and no play makes life pretty dull. But if you learn the ins and outs of entertainment technology, you can end up with work that's all about play! Discover the sound waves in a ringtone, the light magic that makes movies and the topsy-turvy physics of roller coasters. Topics include: animation, video game development, amusement park rides, movie special effects and sound waves.

Juniors Programming Robots and Designing Robots Badges
Start by engineering a simple machine that helps a robot to land and learn about the robot brain. Then create programs for your friends to make images and complete an obstacle course. Work in teams with your fellow Juniors to explore artificial intelligence (AI), then think about how technology and robotics can help the world. Afterward, plan and build a prototype of your robot that solves a global problem. Test and share your robot prototype with other Juniors for ideas on how to make it even better.

Brownies Home Scientist Badge
By paying careful attention during experiments, scientists learn new things — even if they've done the test before. That means you don't have to grow up to be a scientist. You're a scientist every time you do an experiment! In this badge, find out where science has been hiding in your own home. Topics include: kitchen chemistry, static electricity, density, bubbles and slime.

Brownies Programming Robots and Designing Robots Badges
Start by engineering a simple algorithm and learn about programming. Then work in engineering teams with your fellow Brownies to design a robot inspired by a bumblebee, build a robotic arm that helps others to extend their reach and design your own robot that helps others! Test and share your robot prototype with other Brownies for ideas on how to make it even better.

Daisies What Robots Do, How Robots Move and Design a Robot Badges
Learn about the many things robots do, and work in teams to design a robot that solves an everyday problem. Then, become a programmer, and create algorithms for robots and friends. Work like engineers to plan and build a prototype of your robot that solves an everyday problem. After, test and share your robot prototype with your fellow Daisies for ideas on how to make it even better.

Space for lunch is available. Feel free to bring lunches with you!

We welcome siblings and parents of troop members! While space is limited in the workshops, we are happy to welcome siblings of troop members and extra parents who want to come along for the day and have some fun in the science center while the troop members are taking part in the workshop. Siblings and parents of girls taking part in the workshop will receive $5 off admission to Harsco Science Center when they register together at the Whitaker Center Box Office on the day of the troop’s visit.
