Fiberglass
Kite Sculptures
Fiberglass
kite sculptures may be displayed indoors or outdoors at Whitaker
Center, Riverfront Park and local businesses. Artists may paint
and otherwise adorn these sculpted kites while maintaining the
structural integrity and safety of the sculpture. Each fiberglass
kite with metal “string” is approximately 4 feet wide
by 6 feet long, with a total finished height of about 8 feet.
The
surface of each kite sculpture is not primed by the manufacturer.
Priming the surface of the kite will be at the artists' discretion.
Acrylic paint, artificial resin paint or two-component paint can
be used to paint or spray a design on the kites. Although objects
may be attached to the kite sculptures, artists should ensure
that they are attached in such a way that they cannot be easily
removed.
Upon
completion, each kite sculpture must be finished with a minimum
of two topcoats of varnish. An exterior grade sealer that is non-reactive,
non-toxic, UV-resistant and waterproof is strongly recommended.
Kite sculptures returned unvarnished or incorrectly varnished
may not be exhibited.
Artists
will not be responsible for the installation or removal of the
kite sculptures. Artists should be available for touchup work
that may be required after exhibit is underway. If the artists
is not available for necessary touch-ups, Whitaker Center may
ask another artist to make them.
Before
a finished kite sculpture is placed on display, it must be inspected
by a representative of the review panel to ensure conformity to
design standards.
