StringFling Promises Fun for All

HARRISBURG, PA—Whitaker Center for Science and the Arts will officially launch the summer-long extravaganza, KiteFest™ presented by Capital BlueCross at the kick off event StringFling™. On Saturday, April 15th from 11am to 3pm, families, amateur and expert kite fliers are invited to attend this FREE kite-flying festival, taking place on the flattop area of Reservoir Park located at 21st and Walnut Streets in Harrisburg.

Sanctioned by the American Kitefliers Association (AKA), StringFling will include professional kite flying, aerial competitions, kite building workshops for children, a family kite fly, face painting and food and music for the entire community. Renowned kiteflier and kite enthusiast, Phil Broder, will be the Master of Ceremonies for this special event. Guest judges will include the Honorable Mayor Stephen Reed and AKA’s kite making chair, Steve Ferrel, as head judge.

The opening kite making activity will invite children of all ages to create and demonstrate their own kites with assistance from volunteers. Kite competitions and demonstrations will also take place throughout the day, including a special demonstration by noted kite flier, Mike Dallmer and his gigantic rubber ducky kite. Based on experience, categorized kite flying competitions will be offered and judged throughout the day. Both individual and team kite fliers will have the chance to participate in a 2-5 minute Sport Kite Demonstration. The Family Fun Fly will encourage families to test their skills and fly their own kites.

There will be 3-5 categories of competition with cash prizes for winners: $100 for first prize, $50 for second prize, and $25 for third prize.
