about
KiteFest
KiteFest
brings together science and the arts in its celebration
of one of the world’s most enduring media—kites. Kites
have made significant contributions to the arts, science, mathematics,
cultural awareness, and history. Kite flying and kite fliers,
from Benjamin Franklin to Charlie Brown, are a constructive and
quintessential part of American culture. Centuries before Marco
Polo’s travels, kites helped form legends around the globe
that have inspired the human spirit to soar.
This summer-long
outdoor and indoor public art exhibition will create the excitement
of a treasure hunt. Like CowParade
Harrisburg 2004, KiteFest will celebrate the
talents of local artists and involve the entire community, from
residents and visitors to the businesses that sponsor them.
Description
Artists participating
in KiteFest will create kites and kite sculptures to
be displayed throughout Harrisburg and surrounding communities
from June to August. Kites will be featured on lampposts in public
and commercial centers, as well as in “sky galleries”
in prominent public atria. Kite
sculptures will be arranged on public grounds in “gardens”
or processions like Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s “The
Gates”.
In addition
to kites and kite sculptures, Whitaker Center presents the limited-engagement
exhibition, Surf the Wind, created
by the Drachen Foundation. Surf the Wind is an interactive
exhibit bringing together the science of flight, the art of kite-making
and the cultural and historical context of kite-making and kite-flying.
Additional
programming includes StringFling,
the KiteFest kickoff kite fly festival, to be held April 15 at
Reservoir Park with the support of the American
Kitefliers Association; Capital BlueCross Kites in the
Classroom educational programs with the support of the American
Kitefliers Association; and A World of Kites, internationally
themed kite exhibits in Whitaker Center.
Who
Benefits from KiteFest?
In addition
to benefiting Whitaker Center for Science and the Arts, KiteFest
will bring our community together for a common purpose.
Local artists receive tremendous exposure and recognition for
their work. KiteFest will generate tourist activity,
while festival sponsors and partners receive recognition and marketing
opportunities.
